Horseback riding is a central focus at Rock Springs Guest Ranch. Because we own our horses and know their dispositions, we are able to match them to riders based on both personality and skills level. Horseback riders vacationing at Rock Springs range from first-time beginners to those who ride competitively, dude_ranch_riding_5.jpgand we are able to offer an exceptional, fun, and memorable horseback experience to all levels. On the evening of your arrival our Head Wrangler will talk with you about what sort of riding experience you are hoping for during your vacation with us.

With access to over 12,000 acres of land, our diverse terrain offers a variety of horseback riding options with areas of high desert juniper and sagebrush as well as tall ponderosa pines, bitterbrush, and manzanita. Ridges and rim rock offer sweeping views of the Central Cascade Mountains and open areas allow for cantering and off trail riding. dude-ranch-vacation-13.jpg

Our dude ranch riding groups usually consist of up to 6 guests and a wrangler. Because riders are matched with other riders of comparable ability, horseback rides range from "walking only" to those which spend a fair amount of time cantering. Usually, you will ride the same horse all week, allowing both you and your horse to become acquainted and comfortable with one another.   horseback-group.jpg

Children six and over ride with the other guests their age. Children's rides are filled with riding games which are not only fun but progress the skills of the young riders. They often stop out in the woods to build forts or play in the "Indian mazes".Dude Ranch Gymkhana2 This is especially important for the younger ones because two hours can be a long time in the saddle. Children under six have a horse experience all their own, riding "lead line" with an adult on the ground in control of the horse.

For those wishing to inprove their riding skills, we offer lessons with our wranglers in the arena, as well as Natural Horsemanship clinics and lessons throughout the week.

As a safety consideration, Rock Springs Guest Ranch requires the use of ASTM/ SEI certified equestrian helmets by our guests of youth program age: 12 years old and younger. Helmets are optional, although strongly recommended, for teens and adults. We have helmets available for those who do not bring their own. For the safety of our horses, we also have a 250 pound weight limit for riders.

" Comparing Rock Springs to other ranches a definite strength is the riding experience. It felt like riding out with friends- the wranglers were exceptionally warm and friendly, kept things informal whilst maintaining safety. They were good at catering for differing riding abilities. My children are Heather worshipers!! - but enjoyed the company of all the wranglers & given the choice would have been at the barn 24/7."
